Dehradun is also known as Dehra Dun, and is the capital of the state of Uttarakhand, northern India. It’s just 236 kms away from New Delhi, and has been developed as an alternative centre of growth, to help end congestion and overpopulation in Delhi.

The city is interesting, busy and bustling, and in line to become one of India’s smart cities. It’s also a pretty city, close to the foothills of the Himalayas.  There is a huge clock tower in the city centre, The Ghanta Ghar clock Tower, the Paltan Bazaar is a popular meeting and shopping point, the Gurdwaras Nanaksar Sikh temple is impressive and there are monasteries and buddhist centres and shrines in the nearby vicinity.

Dehradrun is a gateway to the Himalayas, and is also part of the Himalayan pilgrimage circuit of Chota Char Dham.  But it also has an astonishing number of institutions that are incredibly important – government institutions, academic institutions, research centres, and huge company headquarters.  The Indian Institute of Petroleum is in Dehradrun,  the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology has headquarters in the city, and the Defence Electronics Application Laboratory is here too.
