Kochi, also known as Cochin, is one of the most interesting cities in India and a real gateway to an astonishing world of beauty, history and culture.  For over 600 years Kochi has drawn spice traders and fisherman to the area and both trades are still enormously important.  There is a rich heritage here, with narrow streets, ancient mosques, old synagogues, Portuguese style houses, arts, craft, music, interesting people and delicious food!

Cochin is still a major port city and harbour but is mostly dependent on tourism.  It has been ranked as the sixth best tourist destination in all of India, which is pretty impressive when you think of how much India has to offer.  It’s definitely worth booking a trip here, to explore not just the history and culture but also the ocean ad the backwaters of Kerala, the stunning beaches, colours, spices and shopping!

Cochin has kept up with the times and is also home to a few large IT parks, the Kinfra Hi-Tech Park and also Infopark. You will also find Cyber City, and then the Cochin Stock Exchange, International Pepper Exchange and major chemical industries here too.  There are excellent universities including the Indian Maritime University and the Cochin University of Science and Technology as well as the Kerala National Law School.

If you’re in Cochin on holiday, make sure you take a boat cruise on the backwaters of Kerala, walk through Newtown and learn about the few remaining Jewish people in the town, visit Fort Kochi, the mosques, the bazaars, the markets and eat the most fantastic seafood too.  It’s really lovely just hanging out by the beach and the port, watching the fisherman go in and out for the day.

If you’re in Cochin, relax, enjoy the art, the food and the ocean.  And if you’re coming to Cochin with the possibility of work, look at their industry.  There is a lot that centres around the port, shipbuilding and the petrochemical industry.  There is a lot of course that centres around hospitality and the service industry, especially tourism which is so big.  And there is a lot that goes on around the IT industry.
