Kozhikode, also known as Calicut, is the largest city in Northern Kerala. It is a very pretty coastal city, once a significant spice trade center. The central beach, Kozhikode Beach is a very popular spot for watching the gorgeous Kerala sunset, and Mananchira Square is where you’ll find teens, families and young lovers hanging out. Kozhikode is known as ‘The City of Sculptures’ as there is a lot of public art displayed around the city.
It was the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama who first put Kozhikode on the map as part of the trade route. That was back in 1498. Kozhikode has since flourished, becoming a major trade hub in Northern Kerala with a good transportation system, with the timber industry and agriculture as the economic mainstays.
Local travellers do spend time in Kozhikode but it is more of a starting point for Wayanad or the long journey over the ghats to Mysore and Bangalore. Kozhikode is not really a tourist destination and has grown rather significantly as a commercial city. There has been a real building boom in the city and many tall buildings are under construction. This includes to huge IT parks or ‘cyber parks’ as they are known in Kozhikode. You will find the UL IT park here and Cyberpark, managed by the government. Cyberpark in particular has been developed to create over one hundred thousand job opportunities. IT, Information Technology, has grown incredibly quickly in Kozhikode, as in other Indian cities, and there are many more planned IT projects that are taking place.
You can also see major growth by the number of malls that have sprung up and the fantastic bus terminal, the biggest in all of Kerala. There is a good road system and the infrastructure in the city is good.
There are a good amount of jobs going in the IT industry in Kozhikode. Working conditions are good as the buildings are new or being developed, the aim to regenerate the city, invest in the people and to create and work on software development, for both the people and for export. The IT parks have a conglomeration of local Indian companies taking office, as well as some national first and multinationals too.
