Madurai is one of the most colorful cities in India.  It’s in the state of Tamil Nadu, is the administrative headquarters of the Madurai district and is known for the astonishing Meenaskhi Amman Temple, a Hindu temple with 14 unbelievably magnificent gopurams (gateway towers), brilliantly carved and exquisitely painted.  

It is a city that thrives on culture and festivities, and is a major pilgrimage site.  Tourists, both local and foreign, flock to Madurai to see the temple and to look for and  reach spiritual enlightenment.

And then, like so much of India, Madurai is a real mix of old and new.  While you have the astonishing ancient temples and offerings being made to Lord Vishnu, there are a different kind of more modern offerings taking place – a technology driven opportunity.  Madurai has sprung up as an IT centre, and so alongside the ancient you have the modern.   Alongside old practices you have new. A special economic zone – SEZ – has been created at Ilanthaikulam near Mattuthavani – and this is now an enormous and buzzing IT park.  It is huge, more than 30 acres, and has become a major contributor to the Madurai economy. There are a number of Software parks, several Indian corporates have set up headquarters and offices in SEZ and many more are coming.  There are also multinational companies, including Honeywell Technologies, Satyan, Sutherland Global Services and HCL, to name just a few.
