Kolhapur is in the west Indian state of Maharashtra and is built on the banks of the Panchaganga River, The city is well known for its temples places and forts, beautiful lakes and gardens. It is the district headquarters of the Kolhapur district.

It is interesting that Kolhapur is not a huge tourist site, although tourism is large within he domestic market. It is well worth visiting the Mahalakshmi Temple, a Hindu pilgrimage site, and the Bhavani Mandap Palace. Jyotiba Temple is on a hilltop overlooking the city and is just gorgeous.

Kolhapur is only a few hours away from Goa. It is at its most vibrant in August, during the snake worshipping festival – Naag Panchami. If you’re going to visit, try and do it during festival time. And don’t forget to try their amazing food which is hot and spicy and unbearably delicious.

Kolhapur, like so many Indian cities, is a mix of old and new. Industry includes textiles, printing, jewellery, pottery, wood carvings, brass-work, silverware, lace and embroidery. The city is also well known for their hand-crafted buffalo leather slippers, local tanned using vegetable dyes.

Domestic tourism does bring in a lot of money and there is a well established film industry here, the Maharashtra Film Company. The city is famous for its film festivals and film city is spread over a 75 acre space in Morewadi. If you’re in the movie making business, this is a good place to be. and if you’re into wrestling as a sport, Kolhapur has a fabulous training centre. Mooting Thalim is where young athletes train in an earthen pit and it is fascinating to watch – and participate.

Information Technology is also a large industry. If you look under ‘job offers’ you will see a wide range of jobs in the IT industry.
