Kota is a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan, 250 kms south of Jaipur, the state capital. Kota is located on the banks of the Chambal River and has a population of just over one million. Kota is not necessarily on the ‘golden triangle’ tourist itinerary as it is more of an educational, industrial and IT hub, but it does have a lot to offer.

The City Palace the fort that surrounds is rather magnificent, filled with riches and treasury from the days of the Raj. At Dussehra Mela massive effigies are built then set aflame during festivities. Hamid Bihari sells the most exquisite gold woven saris which you can watch being sewn, and Kishore Sagar is a picturesque lake with a lovely little tangerine place in the centre. There are also museums and gardens, and boat trips are offered on the river for bird and crocodile viewing.

Kota is also the trade area in which cotton, wheat, millet, oilseeds and coriander are grown and industry has sprung up around this, including textiles, a spice market and weaving. There is also an extensive stone-polishing industry here – the Kota stone, used for walls and floors, is incredibly resilient and a good product.

Over the last 15 years Kota has also emerged as an educational hub of the country and produces excellent students. There are engineering schools, medical schools and many technical institutions. Kota is known as a ‘coaching centre’ and many students come here before they take exams. Education is excellent.

With a strong education system comes a strong Information Technology industry. Kota is also emerging as an IT centre and several national and international companies are choosing to use Kota for their headquarters. Internationals are importing their ‘software’ and getting Indian IT companies to do their digital marketing, software development, and more.
